Located on the elegant Piazza Indipendenza and a short walk from the train station and San Lorenzo market, the three-star Hotel Caravaggio is a classy affair with low rates.
Not surprisingly, the Caravaggio takes its design inspiration from its namesake painter, many of whose works can be found in the nearby Uffizi Gallery. Each of the 37 rooms features a Caravaggio print, which coordinates well with dark brown woods, rich fabrics and touches of burnt red. Large armoires offer plenty of space for unpacking. Each room is equipped with air conditioning, satellite television, minibar and free Wi-Fi, and some have balconies (ask ahead).
Clean, elegant bathrooms are done up in attractive tiles. More upscale rooms have bathtubs with massaging jets—plus views of the Duomo!
The lounge area features vintage couches, an Internet station and a dark mahogany bar. There is also a small, enticing garden in the courtyard. But the real surprise is the second-floor breakfast room, where Klimt artwork hangs. (Caravaggio apparently didn’t like breakfast.)
Breakfast is included.

About the Caravaggio neighborhood
North of the train station is one of Florence's most colorful neighborhoods. San Lorenzo is home to much of the city's foreign population, many of whom man the stands at the bustling local market. The area is the cheapest place to shop and snack in the center of the city. The streets around the market are home to kebab stands and Asian markets galore, as well as cheap clothing and shoe shops.
