Family-run Hotel Desirée is a sure bet. Located a mere two minutes from the central train station in a stately, no-frills early 20th-century building, the Desirée sits just off Via Nazionale, one of the cheapest (and most enjoyable) shopping streets in Florence.
The cozy and bright 18-room place has pretty painted ceilings, Polloni stained glass, and a gorgeous breakfast terrace. Rooms offer elegant details, from original floors to delicate, painted wood furniture. Spacious armoires and antique-style chairs provide a touch of personality. Some rooms offer Duomo views and all have clean, basic bathrooms.
Verdict: Nothing spectacular, yet definitely a dependable bed and breakfast with a taste of Florence, where you'll find everyone from backpackers to honeymooners, all thankful for some reasonably priced double rooms in expensive Florence.

About the Desiree neighborhood
North of the train station, and decidedly the most colorful neighborhood in Florence, San Lorenzo is home to many of the city's foreign population, many of whom man the stands at the bustling local market. The area is the cheapest place to shop and snack in the center of the city. Peruse the stands wisely for real leather bags and accessories, and be on the look out for fakes. The streets around the market are home to kebab stands and Asian markets galore, as well as cheap clothing and shoe shops. San Lorenzo is also home to Fiaschetteria-Trattoria Mario, the real deal as far as authentic Florentine eating goes, miraculously unruined by fame. There's not one guidebook or magazine that hasn't plastered a logo on the front door.
