Hotel Azzi is an old favorite of ours, and during our most recent visit, we noticed they had tacked on a new nickname of sorts: "Locanda degli Artisti." A 14th-century monastery on the site once hosted pilgrims from all around the world. Thus was born an international tradition, upheld in the present day by the Azzi clientele.
Exposed brick, overstuffed bookshelves, pretty framed artwork (much of it by inspired guests), and a cozy dark wood breakfast room and lounge add arty charm to what would otherwise be one of a hundred modest hotels in the bustling, central San Lorenzo area.
Rooms are big and bright, and all come in different shades and styles of antique-inspired décor. With their funky headboards, rather regal brocades, large, mirrored armoires, adorable café chairs, and wrought iron bits and pieces, each room scores points for originality. Bathrooms are spacious, colorful and new, and some even include a bathtub.
The Azzi also has an additional 13 more standard rooms upstairs, which come at slightly lower rates, and are outfitted with a far simpler décor. There are no bathtubs to be found here. In fact, though bathrooms are large and fairly new, the showers aren't separated from the rest of the room. This means that the toilet gets a rinse while you do!
