This sweet, little one-star, is pretty much within spitting distance of the Santa Maria Novella Church. Needless to say, the Hotel Fiorentino's views are none too shabby!
The slightly faded entryway is utterly misleading. Fourteen rooms upstairs are bright, colorful, and clean. Owner Sandro has cleaned out the local IKEA, with no gusto to spare. Original 19th-century tile floors and extraordinarily high ceilings are a perfect backdrop for fluffy down comforters, light pressed wood furniture, giant paintings in flower and dot motifs, and some framed reproductions of easily recognizable works of modern art.
While some rooms come without en suite baths, they've got cute, mosaic-accented sinks for an evening scrub down. We loved the Fiorentino's cool purple skylight on the top floor, and the tiny balconies with their killer views of the church across the street.
This hotel is budget done just right, with all the key amenities and features, and at rates that won't have you recoiling.

About the Fiorentino neighborhood
Across the street from the train station, the area around Piazza Santa Maria Novella is perhaps the most varied neighborhood in the city. The, dingier, urban streets leading to the station get a lot of traffic (both automobile and human) while the other side of the grassy Piazza is formed by narrow, serpentine little streets, characterful buildings, and top-notch shopping. The piazza itself is crowded with picnicking tourists and pick pockets preying on them. The 'hood is bordered by the river, the train station, shopping street Via Tornabuoni, this area suffers a bit of an identity crisis. One thing is for sure: once you're here, you're no more than ten minutes away from anything else.
