One of the most visited squares in all of Italy, the Piazza del Duomo is situated in the heart of Florence and serves as a major sight, meeting point and photo-op. Here sits the awe-inspiring Duomo (the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore), topped with the massive dome by Brunelleschi (who is buried in its crypt), completed in 1436.

Other buildings of note in the square include Giotto’s Campanile (bell tower), the Opera del Duomo Museum and the Florence Baptistry.

The square bustles day and night with pedestrians, street performers and vendors. The steps of the Duomo are an especially popular hangout spot with tourist—and even with some of the locals.
