The three-star Hotel Rossija is a centrally-located budget hotel, housed in a characterless building in the red light district. Charming it’s not, but it does what it promises, offering a warm place to rest, a solid included breakfast and blunt but well-intentioned hospitality.

Disclaimer: As we approached the Hotel Rossija—situated in a perfectly respectable-looking building that happens to be flanked between a strip club and a slot machine casino—we saw a group of junkies huddled together.

Once we were, um, buzzed in, however, we discovered a perfectly acceptable, albeit aged, hotel centered around a quiet back courtyard. The Rossija’s 35 guestrooms are adequate but not impressive. They are tidy and the linens appear clean, but the carpet needs to be changed. All rooms are equipped with a telephone and TV.

Light-filled private bathrooms, all equipped with tubs, certainly earn this Russian-run establishment some plus points.

The verdict: The Hotel Rossija (and its immediate vicinity) could use some scrubbing, but it nonetheless makes a convenient base.

Breakfast is included and Wi-Fi is available for an additional charge.
