Facing the train station, the Hotel Bernina is a traditional three-star spot that has managed to stay in the accommodation business since 1860. Its 77 rooms are dated but clean, and its convenient location is hard to beat.
The Bernina seems a bit confused about its identity. The stately “Fazy-era” (radical leader James Fazy played a major role in shaping the city during the mid-19th century) building, a style typical of upscale lakeside properties on Geneva’s left bank, promises a classy experience. But the dark, narrow entry next to a pizzeria is less than impressive. Likewise, funky red bucket chairs in the lobby hint at retro-chic interiors, but the mediocre rooms upstairs do not live up to such expectations.
The rooms are simply appointed with flimsy wooden furniture that you won’t remember—unless you break it. A telephone, safe and cable TV somewhat make up for the lack of frills. Bathrooms, some with tubs and others with showers only, have tiles filled with stained grouting and embroidered towels just begging to be retired.
Let us put this plainly: Hotel Bernina is in need of a major overhaul. Facilities are “simple” in the truest sense of the word. And the synthetic burgundy carpet found in some rooms is aesthetically disgraceful. But what redeems this hotel is the friendliness of its young staff. And the convenience of its location—just a few steps away from the station in the heart of the city—should be reiterated.
If you can get an off-season or weekend deal, Hotel Bernina could be a convenient and affordable base, as long as you’re not planning on spending too much time inside. But if you have to pay the full price, we recommend looking elsewhere—you can get more for your money, even in Geneva.
A basic breakfast is included in the room rate. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
