Mainly a longer-stay residence catering to businesspeople, the Residence St. James is a conveniently located establishment that offers studios of various sizes. While the staff is friendly, the hotel is in need of renovation (and a thorough Swiss-style scrub-down). Frankly, this would not be our first pick, but for unfussy travelers in search of rare low rates, it might fit the bill.
The St. James offers 51 studios and apartments with kitchenettes, all of which are scruffy at best. The grubby red carpet has occasional cigarette burns, and the furniture seems like an afterthought, picked up from consignment shops here and there. There’s no real unity or consistency: One room may have not much more than a bed, dresser and TV, while another could have a washing machine inside the unit.
And with the dark curtains closed, the rooms are depressing—push them open and you’ll be treated to the equally depressing view of the office building across the street. (Note, too, that as the property faces a major traffic artery, noise is also a problem).
Bathrooms follow suit, with cracked tiles and a generally dated feel.
It’s bare-bones all the way here. Breakfast isn’t included in the room rate (it costs CHF15 and is, frankly, not worth the money) or daily housekeeping. If you want to watch a DVD, you have to rent a machine for CHF8. There is a free Internet station though.
In short, this dated residence, located on a busy boulevard that runs parallel to the River Rhone, is far from our idea of Swiss cleanliness, but for a family or group not too bothered by a bit of mess, this could be a budget option. The huge five-person apartments go for officially CHF350 a night (but try to ask for a better deal). Otherwise, you may do yourself a favor by looking elsewhere.
Wi-Fi is available for an additional charge.

About the Hotel Residence St James neighborhood
On the south side of town, Eaux-Vives, considered Geneva's city center, is home to Jet d'Eau, Geneva's iconic water fountain. The area offers easy access to the cobbled Rue de la Cite where visitors can find Rousseau's birthplace. Up a steep hill tourists can visit Cathedrale St Pierre (home of John Calvin's pulpit).
