You'll find the three-star Hotel Anna at the head of Annakatu, a street smack-dab in the middle of Helsinki's trendy Design District. The hotel itself is simple, clean, and convenient, and the rates are moderate, if not downright Cheapo (which is quite notable in this expensive capital city).

The 64 rooms sport a simple but appealing décor that works well with the blue and beige striped wallpaper. The checkered carpeting has clearly seen some years, yet everything is perfectly clean. In addition to doubles, singles, and family rooms (with three or four beds), twin rooms with two small beds are available. Bathrooms are the standard set-up of shiny white tiling and spotless showers. Bathtubs are available in only three rooms (ask ahead).

The included breakfast is served in a cheery room decorated with sunflower prints and potted plants. We enjoyed chatting with Kari Törmä, the friendly manager, who took time to recommend the best sights and restaurants in Helsinki (and all of Finland, for that matter).
