One of four RT hotels in Krakow (two of which we review on EuroCheapo), three-star RT Monopol is our favorite of the bunch. It’s on the higher end of the EuroCheapo spectrum, but the upscale atmosphere and central location—on busy ul. Św. Gertrudy near Market Square—make it decidedly splurge-worthy.
The RT Monopol’s 75 rooms are plain but comfortable. Bedspreads carpets come in a variety of creamy hues. Furniture approaches cherry-brown. Rooms tend to the capacious side. The effect is faux-antique à la Ethan Allen, disturbed only by plastic bedside lamps. All rooms are equipped with a telephone, free Wi-Fi and satellite television. Bathrooms sport neutral tiles.
Overall, if you need aesthetic excitement or adhere to a tight budget, the RT Monopol is not for you. But if a certain assurance of a mid-range hotel standard amenities, service and comfort is important to you, the RT Monopol will fit the bill.
And who can resist the stairs leading out of the lobby area in their pure late 1980s elegance? We found the chrome banisters and reproduction oriental carpets especially fetching.

About the RT Monopol neighborhood
Stare Miasto (Old Town) is the heart of Old Krakow. Encircled by a greenbelt park and bookended by Wawel (Castle) Hill at its south and the Florian Gate at its north, the area is full of tourist sights. These include Rynek Glowny—the Main Market Square and the biggest medieval city square in Europe—St. Andrew's Church and Wawel Castle. Swank cafes and restaurants abound here.
