The Albergaria Residencial Insulana provides well-preserved rooms with great rates in the very heart of the Baixa grid. If you're looking for a professionally-run operation with clean rooms, the Insulana is a safe bet.

The pension's 32 rooms mix sturdy wooden antique furnishings with '70s-retro pieces. We saw lots of white walls, green carpets and floral bedspreads. Rooms are well equipped for a pension, all with air conditioning, a flat-paneled TV and telephone. And they're quite clean: We encountered what seemed like an army of cleaners. Bathrooms, with their lime-green tub/shower combos and dated fixtures, are a bit “retro.”

The Insulana occupies three floors of a five-story building. Its location, at the corner of Rua da Assunção and Rua dos Correiros, puts it smack in the heart of café-lined and pedestrian-only Baixa. Rooms on the second and fourth floor offer balconies overlooking the streets—certainly a romantic plus. The pedestrian streets can get noisy at night, so light sleepers should ask for one of the 12 rooms that face the back.

Free Wi-Fi is offered in the hotel's lounge and public areas. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate.
