The three-star Dom Carlos Liberty is conveniently located along Rua Alexandre Herculano, just to the east of the Avenida da Liberdade. The 59-room hotel is fresh and designed with panache.
Rooms are attractively decorated with modern beige-and-white color schemes, oversized wooden headboards with inset leather and throw pillows galore. Dom Carlos packs in all the amenities you'd expect, including cable TV, telephone, air conditioning and soundproof windows. We noticed quite a bit of storage and closet space in the rooms we inspected.
Bathrooms are glassy, spotlit, finished in marble and equipped with modern fixtures. It's a comfortable and posh package.
A complimentary fitness center on the eighth floor offers guests exercise bikes, treadmills, rooftop views and the chance to sweat it out while watching VH1. A full-scale “Dom Carlos” breakfast buffet (with eggs, cheeses and meats) is served in the lounge every morning and included in the nightly rate.
Another Dom Carlos hotel, the larger Dom Carlos Park, is located a few blocks away and offers rooms of a similarly high caliber (and even a bit larger).
Free Internet is offered through a plug-in cable in the rooms, while free Wi-Fi is offered in the lobby.

About the Dom Carlos Liberty neighborhood
The Avenida da Liberdade runs between two metro stations and is Lisbon's "Grand Boulevard." Lined with pricey shops, office buildings and restaurants, it's a broad, impressive street, and the major artery of Lisbon. As a general rule, the farther you walk from the river, the more modern it becomes. The Botanical Gardens are nearby.
