Located on the second and third floor of a building directly across from Rossio train station and next to Rossio Square, the Pensão Estacao Central provides frill-free, cheap sleeping in the center of town. The 27-room pension is family-run, old-fashioned and bare-bones.
The Estacao's second-floor lounge and reception area is a stuffy, smoky affair, with leather sofas and plants. Bedrooms sport brighter colors, laminated floors, simple beds and not much else. There are no TVs, telephones or even air conditioners here. Mid-sized bathrooms are equipped with mini-tub/shower combos and bidets.
It's all about location and price at the Estacao. For €30, you can reserve a double with private facilities, next to Rossio Square. It's no charmer, but it's a deal.

About the Pensao Estacao Central neighborhood
The grid-shaped Baixa neighborhood was completely rebuilt following Lisbon’s an earthquake in 1755. Today the area functions as the city's chief shopping hub. Two large streets, rua Augusta and rua de Santa Justa, are pedestrian-only. Baixa is an easy jumping-off point for seeing the rest of the city. Praça Rossio, sitting at the top of Baixa, is the city's most active square.
