The 17-room Pensão Globo offers perfectly respectable though very basic rooms on a quiet side street in northern Bairro Alto. Set in a cheerful, turquoise house, it's a step or two above hostel-style sleeping. In other words, if you need a lot of closet space or amenities, go elsewhere. Otherwise this place is an irresistably good deal.
Rooms are clean, though small. Simple but quality wood furniture, cute little lamps, and sweet framed pictures make them feel cozy rather than just cramped. Tiled bathrooms have teeny tiny sinks and tight shower stalls. But fixtures are up-to-date. We could do without the blue linoleum covering some room floors, but my, those rates are cheap!
Five rooms face the front street. The rest face the back. Rooms on the top level have slanted ceilings and look out onto pretty rooftops. But the sun streaming in from the skylight-cum-window could bake you during the hotter months.
Water, soda, milk, and coffee are for sale in the lobby. Many accolades from guide books means that the Globo stays popular. Reserve ahead.
