The 10-room Pensão Luar, located along the Barrio Alto's Rua das Gaveas, offers low-priced, simple rooms with private facilities. Luar is conveniently located for visitors who want to hit the area's bar and club scene and don't mind a loud, carousing street at night.
Rooms are simply furnished with bright blue comforters, laminate floors, TV and telephone. Framed photos hang on stark walls, and the rooms, at least when we visited, have a distinct, "floral-clean" smell. All rooms face the popular street, and five have small balconies. Windows are soundproof, though that will not be so helpful during hot summer months when you'll need them open.
All rooms are equipped with simple, private bathrooms. Interestingly, eight of these baths are sectioned off in the corner of the room with walls that don't extend all the way to the ceiling!
Full-wall bathrooms or not, the Luar still presents a very good value.

About the Pensao Luar neighborhood
West of Baixa, the Bairro Alto twists up a mountain. Its moody streets are bordered by steep stairways and winding alleys. The Bairro Alto is beautiful, with an organic mix of the hip, rustic, and picturesque. It's also crowded at night thanks to hot clubs, trendy bars and restaurants. Between the two 'hoods sits hilly Chiado; it's full of sophisticated cafes, museums, boutiques and theaters.
