The family-run Residencial Londrina, located along the busy Rua Castilho west of Liberdade, offers 14 charming rooms at reasonable rates. The residence is spotless and well-kept in a grandmotherly way.

The Londrina's kindly owners, the Ferraria family, keep their residence lovingly appointed. It's obvious that you're in an old apartment, with its high ceilings, generous proportions and occasional balconies. (Ask ahead for one of two rooms with a view.) The proprietors have decorated tastefully throughout, from the floral wallpaper to the attractive curtain treatments. It isn't new, but it's clean and feels fresh.

As the Londrina occupies a former apartment, room sizes vary. Our favorite room, No. 117, is a spacious double with a balcony and twin beds inlaid with Portuguese tiles. All rooms, in fact, have some Portuguese tiling action, along with soundproof windows, air conditioning, cable TV and telephone.

Private baths, in all rooms, are sometimes quite large and equipped with either shower (in two rooms) or bathtub (in 12).

One note: The friendly Ferrarias speak very little English. We were, however, able to communicate—through a combination of words, hand gestures and laughter.

Breakfast is included in the room rate. Wi-Fi is offered for free throughout the residence.
