The Residencial Astoria provides workable two-star rooms on the busy Rua Braamcamp, just west of the Parque Eduardo.
Its 79 rooms provide basic comforts, including air-conditioning, TV, telephone, and private baths—all with bathtubs. However, décor has moved past "simple" or "charmingly retro" into "in need of immediate attention." (We loved the green '70s rotary telephone, but couldn't appreciate the brown-tiled bath with the same gusto.)
And so the Astoria is planning to upgrade its room to "boutique" style. One model room open to visitation is a vision of trendy style, with dark wooden furnishings and flat-screens. Renovation are scheduleds to begin in late 2006.
In the meantime, you're the Astoria provides no-nonsense, clean, and equipped rooms at a cheap price.
