The four-story Residência Mar Dos Açores is the pride and joy of owner Honorario who, five years ago, turned a more than hundred-year-old, abandoned building into a tidy budget inn.
Covered in pretty green tiles, this hotel offers 32 simple rooms, all with air-conditioning, in a residential/hotel area. But keep in mind, the Açores is situated outside the action—at least a 10-minute walk east from Marquês de Pombal.
Plenty of natural light and the pretty azuelejos decorating the doors and halls give the place a cheerful feel. Rooms come in different shapes and sizes, the cheapest (and smallest) having bathrooms that are private but located across a hall. These at least have a sink and bidet en suite.
Furnishings are simple though fairly new. Some rooms have pretty tiles lining the walls. Others come with a mini-fridge. Request ahead.
The Açores has a guest kitchen with a stove and pleasant sitting area. You can buy phone cards at the reception.
