Tucked away on a narrow street to the west of Liberdade, the Residencia Nova Avenida is classic Cheapo. Rooms are simple and sweet, and the prices reflect it.
The Nova Avenida was once a building of family apartments, and today it still feels homey. We loved the ground floor entrance, with its blue and white tiled walls, plants, and marble staircase. The pension's 28 rooms, both with and without private bathrooms, mostly provide the basics: plain wood furniture, simple tiled floors, and no-frills baths.
However, touches of treasure are to be found in certain second-floor rooms, with higher ceilings, restored crown molding, and the occasional mid-century chandelier. On the third floor, décor gets more attention yet, with some lovely antique wooden dressers and wardrobes, mixed in amongst the less historic pieces.
Rooms on the front have full balconies, and those on the third floor offer great views of the city. Rooms on the back are quieter, overlooking a shared courtyard and garden.
The Residencia Nova Avenida is about five minutes west of Avenue de Liberdade. Rua Santo António da Glória, however, is very quiet and feels much further away from the action than it really is.
