The Joao XXI, a three-star residence located in the heart of Estefania, offers modestly-priced rooms with private baths and a homey touch.

Rooms are pleasant, with wooden beds and dressers and coordinating navy blue curtains and bedspreads. All are equipped with cable TV, telephone and air conditioning. Private baths, in all rooms, are all equipped with bathtubs. Our favorite rooms, notably corner units, have small balconies.

As the Rua Gomes Freire is quite busy, light sleepers should ask for a room facing either the quieter side street or the courtyard.

Blue Portuguese tiling lines the lower portion of the residence's hallways, reception and lounge, while abstract prints hang above. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate. Note that the same owner runs the nearby Residencia Mar dos Acores, which offers simpler rooms at even lower rates.

To reach Lisbon's tourist center from the Residencial Joao XXI, take the city bus (#790) that stops in front of the hotel and heads to the center every 15 minutes (daily until 10 p.m.). The Metro stop “Picoas” is a 10-minute walk, or the center is a 20-30 minute walk.
