The VIP Suites do Marquês offers 84 suites with kitchenettes and a dated, ‘90s style. However, it's a sensible option for business travelers and families looking to stretch out a bit.

Suites, though lacking any charm (and, we're told, slated for a renovation), are spacious and clean. All are air conditioned and furnished with a sitting area with a sofa, dining table and chairs, cable TV and telephone. Half of the rooms provide two twin beds, while the others have king-sized beds. Kitchenettes, in all rooms, include a stove top, sink and dining accoutrements.

Bathrooms are equipped with a tub/shower combo and have plenty of counter space to unpack your toiletries.

We loved the rooftop deck. Not only does it offer views of the city, river and bridge, but there's a pool and sauna up there! It's not large, but it will get you wet with a view (open 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.).

Breakfast is sometimes included in the room rate (check with reserving). Wi-Fi is available for €3 per hour, or €10 per day. The onsite restaurant serves three meals a day.

The Marquês is a five- to 10-miinute walk east of Metro Marquês de Pombal.
