Yet another beautiful bed and breakfast located along Cartwright Gardens, the George Hotel overlooks the communal gardens and boasts40 peaceful and affordable rooms.
To be sure, it’s not the lap of luxury, but the George Hotel is a sweet spot with an enviable location in quiet, central, well-to-do Bloomsbury location (less than a 10-minute walk from the British Museum).
Quick read
Pros: Peaceful and pretty. Efficient, helpful staff. Great location. Historic building.
Cons: No elevator (and lots of stairs). Simple and could use an update.
Rooms
Guest rooms at the George Hotel, which range in size from single-bed to family-use rooms, are simply decorated and have a warm, intimate feel. They are small (as is typical in London budget hotels) but they are comfortable and clean, with utilitarian furnishings and the occasional piece of art to add a little personality.
All rooms are equipped with a TV, tea/coffee maker, safe and telephone. We suggest requesting a room that looks out over the gorgeous Cartwright Gardens.
Bathrooms
Rooms at the George Hotel come in a variety of configurations. Single rooms either have a private or shared bathroom. Doubles and triples are available with a full private bathroom, just a private shower, or, the cheapest, shared facilities. Quads have a full private bathroom.
Whether shared or private, bathrooms are clean and functional, if dated. Rooms are equipped with a hair dryer.
Hotel
A full English breakfast (including cereal, juices, coffee/tea, eggs, toast, assorted breakfast meats and baked beans) is included in the room rate. The George’s classic, albeit small, dining room is decked out with blue, pink and green wallpaper and a small sitting area with a coffee table and comfy sofa. Striped curtains frame its lovely arched windows, which look out onto the pretty gardens.
As its name implies, the George Hotel is situated in a building that combines three Georgian-era townhouses. Guests have access to the private park across the street, which includes tennis courts. (There is a nominal fee to use the courts, and the hotel provides racquets and balls for guests to borrow.)
Wi-Fi free throughout, and there is also a free computer station in reception area.
Location
The George Hotel benefits from a fabulous location along the lush Cartwright Gardens The area is the former stomping ground of many of London’s movers and shakers, including Sir Rowland Hill, who originated the modern postage system, and Edwin Chadwick, who helped bring about public health reform in the 19th century.
The hotel makes an easy home base for exploring London. From here, it’s less than an 10-minute walk to King’s Cross Station, a central transportation hub for getting in, out and around the city.
