Ten minutes away from Buckingham Palace, the Harcourt Hotel is a pleasant, cozy bed-and-breakfast on Ebury Street, run for 25 years by David and Glesni Wood. David, who accurately described himself as "charming, witty, and Welsh," gave us the grand tour and filled us in on how the Belgravia neighborhood has changed in the last quarter century. Don't worry—it's mostly for the good.
Rooms are pretty, though not ornate, decorated in Victorian colors with brass beds and floral bedspreads and carpeting. Though the televisions are a bit small (and a bit old), crown molding and the occasional fireplace or antique chair (in the larger rooms) compensate adequately.
The Harcourt has single, double, and triple rooms—all en suite. Triples have one double bed and one twin. If requesting a room for two, be sure to state whether you need one double bed or two twins.
Rooms in the back offer an atypical view—Margaret Thatcher's backyard! You'll recognize her house as the one with all the surveillance cameras on the roof. Let us know what you see …
With only 10 rooms, recommendations from many a guide book, and a truly charming owner, it's a good idea to book in advance. Note: the only guest telephone is the payphone in the hall.
