The Lancaster Hall Hotel, informally called the "German YMCA," is located one block from Kensington Gardens and provides clean hotel and hostel accommodations in a very '70s setting. The hotel is affiliated with the German YMCA association, however guests from all over the world fill its rooms. The Lancaster Hall provides hotel rooms for business and leisure guests, while hostel rooms fill mostly with student groups.
Constructed in 1973, the Lancaster has the brutal concrete façade to prove it. Upstairs, hallways are lined with wood paneling and florescent lighting, reminiscent of a '70s office building. (It's only missing the smell of the mimeograph machine.)
The 80 rooms in the hotel section are basic and clean, with slightly more recent furnishings. It's been recently renovated with fresh paint, new carpets and curtains. All baths are equipped with tubs and are quite clean.
The hostel rooms at the Lancaster are less like a youth hostel and more like a tidy budget hotel. In fact, the only thing that makes them "hostel" rooms at all is the fact that they contain three or four beds and share hall facilities. Towels and soap are provided.
