The Lancaster Hall Hotel is located one block from Kensington Gardens. Although it’s informally referred to as the “German YMCA” (and is in fact affiliated with the German organization) guests from all over the world fill Lancaster Hall’s rooms. The hotel provides two-star rooms for business and leisure guests, while hostel rooms fill mostly with student groups.

Quick read

Pros: Convenient location. Clean, fairly spacious rooms.

Cons: Basic and outdated. Can get noisy.

Rooms

The 80 rooms in the Lancaster Hall’s hotel section are basic and clean, with fine but dated furnishings. All are outfitted with twin beds, coffee and tea facilities, a TV and phone.

The hostel rooms, ranging from singles to quads, are less like a youth hostel and more like a tidy budget hotel. In fact, the only thing that makes them "hostel" rooms at all is the fact that they lack the hotel room amenities and share facilities in the hall. And, despite their designation as the Lancaster Hall’s “youth wing,” hostel rooms are suitable for guests of any age (and much cheaper!).

Bathrooms

Rooms in the hotel portion of the Lancaster Hall Hotel have private baths which are quite clean and equipped with tubs. Each hostel room is outfitted with a sink, and shared facilities are simple yet clean. Towels and soap are provided, but be sure to bring your other toiletries.

Hotel

The Lancaster Hall was constructed in 1973, and it has the brutal concrete façade to prove it. Upstairs, hallways are lined with wooden paneling and florescent lighting, reminiscent of a '70s office building. (It's only missing the smell of the mimeograph machine.)

Breakfast, included in the room rate, is served in the hotel’s laid-back restaurant/lounge area.

Booking at the Lancaster Hall Hotel

As we point out above, the Lancaster Hall Hotel does not offer online booking. To reserve a room, you’ll have to contact the hotel directly by email or telephone (see below, under “more information”).

If you’d like a suggestion for a hotel in the area that does offer online booking, check out our review of the “cheap-as-chips” Caring Hotel. The Astor Quest Hostel, situated a short jaunt from Hyde Park, is also a good option for social types.
