The Premier Inn is the largest hotel chain in the UK, with more than 20 hotels in and around London to consider. So why do we like this particular Premier Inn? We’re swayed by its location, a mere hop, skip and a jump from the Tate Modern. Even closer is Borough Market, every London gourmet’s favorite haunt. A leisurely stroll across the Thames brings you to the heart of the City of London.

Premier Inn London Southwark’s rooms achieve a midrange chain standard without a lot of effort. Though they’re admittedly fairly ho-hum, they are reasonably attractive in comparison to other hotels in their league. Among the style plusses, we like the cherry wood paneling in bathrooms, which pairs very well with the white wall tiles and maintains a modern theme. Also appreciated is the room size, which is on the large than average for London.

Also worth a mention is the striking purple color scheme. The purplish hue gives rooms a colorful glow missing from many chain hotels. We imagine that UK business travelers may well get tired of the purpley Premier Inn rooms week in week out, but for those used to blander color combinations or the abandonment of style altogether in chain hotel experiences, these rooms are gently pleasing.

For visitors seeking no surprises, Premier Inn is a good bet. Nightly rates vary by room type and availability. The starting rate of £99 for a double isn’t ultra-cheap, but it’s reasonable for London. During peak times, rates jump by over 50 percent, well beyond our Cheapo budgets. Yet still, even at the pricier end, Premier Inn offers a far better value than what you’ll find at many more expensive chain hotels.
