When we arrived to check out the Ridgemount Hotel, a charming family-operated hotel along Gower Street, Mrs. Rees, who has been running the hotel with her husband since 1965, was putting departing guests into a cab. She stood and waved them off, making sure they got off OK before turning to deal with us. "Right then," she said, smiling, "and what can I do for you today?"
This is the Ridgemount. Two two-hundred-year-old neighboring townhouses joined to create 32 rooms, offering both private and en suite facilities. Rooms at the Ridgemount are cozy and "correct", making you feel like you're part of the family. Neither furnishings nor decor are elaborate, though the red carpets and pink walls are attractive and welcoming. Tile baths are equipped with shower and sink, while rooms with shared facilities provide only sinks. Rooms facing Gower Street can be a bit noisy, so bring earplugs during the warm months.
Downstairs in the reception area, a guest book bulges with appreciative comments from former lodgers, while a cute backyard garden invites guests in warmer weather.
