The National Portrait Gallery, the world’s first portrait gallery when it opened in 1856, contains portraits of famous British citizens throughout history. Portraits cover a wide variety of media, including paintings, photographs, sculptures and drawings.
The collection covers a lot of (British) territory, and includes faces as varied as the Brontë sisters, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and even the Beckhams (to add a little Spice). Probably the best-known portrait in the gallery is Chandos’ portrait of William Shakespeare.
