Bulls-eye! Directly above Sol, the central nervous system of Madrid, is Hostal Puerta del Sol, a gay-friendly hostal that also welcomes straights. Puerta del Sol's iconic rainbow flag can be seen on many a Madrid postcard. Although we give Puerta del Sol a big thumbs up for great attitude and its unbeatable perch just above Sol, its steep prices certainly reflect its location.
Rooms are tastefully decorated with canvas wardrobes and hanging antique wood mirrors. Glass-topped tables are covered with flamenco and club brochures. Drapery is dark, designed to block out Plaza Sol's strong morning sun. Spanish ceramic tile decorate the en suite bathrooms. Neat freaks, rejoice: the owners' pet peeve is dust, and they dust obsessively.
The breakfast room is inviting, with high, wooden-beam ceilings. Minimalist hanging lights inject the hostal with a modern touch without robbing it of any of its historic integrity. On the perk front, coffee and goodies like chocolate milk and cereal are available around the clock.

About the Gay Hostal Puerta del Sol Madrid neighborhood
The Puerta del Sol is the geographic and historic center of old Madrid. Within walking distance of most of central Madrid's tourist offerings, the Puerta del Sol is an obligatory stop for all visitors to Madrid. Calle Mayor, a major commercial and business street, runs to the west of Puerta del Sol. Tiny, dense streets packed with tapas bars, restaurants, and cafes lie to Puerta del Sol's south. Many of Madrid's best hotels are on the Puerta del Sol, while pensions can be found along the side streets.
