This two-star hostal sits directly above Gran Vía, in a building jam-packed with other hostals that we didn't like quite as much. The Hostal Residencia Felipe V caters to a mature guest list that appears to begin at age 30. We were impressed by the sunny entrance's fresh paint job and grandiose antique windows, not to mention the large jutting balconies available in some rooms. Be sure to request a room with a balcony.
Down wide hallways covered by attractive runners are 20 rooms decorated with inexpensive faux wood furniture. While the light fixtures look like they're from the 1980s, the floors are brand new. Windows are soundproofed so traffic noise isn't the problem that it is in some of the other hostals in the building.

About the Hostal Residencia Felipe V neighborhood
The Gran Vía, Madrid's main boulevard, stretches majestically from the Plaza de España and encompassesthe Puerta del Sol. The Gran Vía is like no other avenue in Madrid. It's a truly grand boulevard populated by impressive and massive art-nouveau buildings, cinemas, shopping, and theaters. Both pricey (three-, four- and five-star hotels) and cheapo (one-star pensions) accommodations populate the Gran Vía.
