Sure the reception area of the Hostal Riesco reminds you of Sigmund Freud's office, but you shouldn't dismiss this place just yet ... Super cheap and located directly on Puerta del Sol, the Riesco provides a nice, air-conditioned stay near the heart of Madrid.
A father-daughter team mans the reception area, which is decorated with leather sofas, Persian rugs, an art deco radio, and a ceramic of a german shepherd (think canine, not lederhosen). Little English is spoken, but this family-run place is friendly and courteous.
All rooms have beautiful hardwood floors and balconies that face either Puerta del Sol or the side street Calle Correo. Pretty floral fabrics adorn beds and windows, and attractive carved wooden furniture is in perfect condition. It's obvious that the owners have put time and thought into the decor and the furnishings.
Most rooms have full bathrooms (all of which have weird, kitschy accordion doors). However, things are pared down in the telecommunications department: you'll find no telephones or televisions here.
