When prim and seedy rub shoulders, the results are often entertaining. This renovated three-star business class hotel seems a bit out of place on Calle Montera, a street leading from Gran Vía to Plaza Sol best known for sex shops and prostitutes.
Everything at the Hotel Ateneo feels squeaky clean and chic. Its new fixtures, modern bathrooms outfitted with telephones, and big televisions seem to be enveloped in a nimbus of clean-car smell. Tasteful bedding and a minimalist glass bathroom sink looked to us like outtakes from modern designer magazines. Ateneo's high ceilings provide the only reminder of the building's original 18th-century structure.
There's also an Internet workspace in the salon downstairs, free of charge. Each room also has free ADSL Internet, nice toiletries, and a minibar.

The Gran Vía, Madrid's main boulevard, stretches majestically from the Plaza de España and encompasses the Puerta del Sol. The Gran Vía is like no other avenue in Madrid. It's a truly grand boulevard populated by cinemas, shopping, theaters and impressive art-nouveau buildings. Accommodations here can from for the very pricey (three-, four- and five-star hotels) to the comfortably cheapo (one-star pensions).
