Sequestered away on a small offshoot of Gran Via near Plaza España (and our favorite underground Chinese restaurant, which is literally located underground the Plaza) is Casón del Tormes, a three-star hotel.
It got our attention for its spacious and attractive 63 rooms. The fact it's also near the heavily policed Spanish Senate means that there's a constant police presence.
Casón del Tormes used to be yet another link in the Best Western chain, but it recently went indie. In doing so, it has tossed the generic hotel carpeting out for humble wood flooring. Dark-wood furniture can be found in every room, and is complemented by toile or paisley-inspired bedspreads, depending on the room. All rooms are exterior and face the quiet street.
Note: This hotel was visited by a EuroCheapo editor and is recommended based on cleanliness, location, price and overall quality. EuroCheapo did not charge this hotel to be listed.

About the Cason del Tormes neighborhood
The Puerta del Sol is the geographic and historic center of old Madrid, within walking distance of most of central Madrid's tourist offerings. Calle Mayor, a major commercial and business street, runs to the west of Puerta del Sol, and to the south are tiny, dense streets packed with tapas bars, restaurants and cafés. Many of Madrid's best hotels are on the Puerta del Sol, while pensions can be found along the side streets.
