The Dos Castillas, above the midst of Sol's shopping hub, is dependable and reliable. It's a good deal for the money, but you shouldn't expect luxury. Opened in 2004, the three-star hotel has a new and industrialized feel, with corporate-standard room furniture, and this despite the fact that it's an independent property.
Only four of the 62 rooms have balconies. Blond wood furniture decorates simple, comfortable rooms that feel more US Midwestern than Spanish. Wood floors, blue plaid bedspreads, and televisions on lazy Susans add to the made-in-America finish. Our favorite room was a corner room, No. 502, with a huge bed and surfeit of light.
Bathrooms offer his-and-her sinks, a towel warmer, shaving mirror, and hydro-massage showers, all of which we found super appealing. We also liked the attached large sit-down café-restaurant, where guests enjoy complimentary breakfast.

About the Hotel Dos Castillas neighborhood
The Puerta del Sol is the geographic and historic center of old Madrid, within walking distance of most of central Madrid's tourist offerings. Calle Mayor, a major commercial and business street, runs to the west of Puerta del Sol, and to the south are tiny, dense streets packed with tapas bars, restaurants and cafés. Many of Madrid's best hotels are on the Puerta del Sol, while pensions can be found along the side streets.
