Introducing Marseille - Marseille, France

Introducing Marseille

Marseille's character is still very much shaped by its role as a major Mediterranean port, a role which the city has held since its founding by the Greeks in 600 BC.

The second-most populous city in France, Marseille does not boast the same tourist destination status as other cities in the region, like Nice or Cannes, but its long history and cultural diversity mean there is plenty to discover for those planning a quick stopover or a longer visit. The French national anthem, “La Marseillaise,” was inspired by the large groups of revolutionaries from Marseille who marched to Paris in 1792 during the French Revolution.
