In spitting distance of the main train station, Hotel Condor will fulfill all of your Bavarian kitsch fantasies—and then some. Imagine yellow paint-splotch effect wallpaper; dark chocolate light fixtures, bedframes, and desks; chrome and glass bedside tables; and pillows plumped just so. All rooms have private bathrooms, and all private bathrooms have tubs. If that isn’t an invitation to sit in bubbles and pretend that you’re a character from "Dynasty" à la Dominique Devereaux, we don’t know what is. A recent wave of renovations began in January 2005, but you wouldn’t know it from the look of many of the 65 rooms, which continue to feature an archetypical 1980s vibe.
1980s kitsch is always exciting. See it on display in Hotel Condor's ground level bar, which features huge overstuffed pinkish couches. See yet more of it on the stairway leading up from the main lobby, with its rose print carpet. Or dash it all and marvel at the wall murals along the stairway and hallways. Condor’s commitment to kitsch relaxes a bit in the courtyard, which has got to be one of the best places in Munich to write an obligatory postcard or two.
Condor's aesthetic is bold enough to attract those who might view its flourishes as kitschy as well as those who might see them as classy. And the Condor's location, on a little side street south of the main train station and adjacent to Munich’s famed old city, is ideal.
