Hotel Royal Garni sits on the borderline between Schillerstrasse's touristland and smutville. While the sex shop downstairs may turn you off (or on), don't forget that the train station is conveniently located just minutes away.
Renovated in 2002, Hotel Royal's 40 tidy rooms tend to be large and very simple. There's little in terms of design to set the Royal's rooms apart. Carpeted floors are unremarkable, while couches with huge pillows are a nice addition. Otherwise, we found little variation in the bed cover-curtain color coordination.
To be brutally honest, the Royal's staff won't win any politeness awards. We might charitably attribute their behavior to Bavarian efficiency, but truthfully, we felt a bit unnecessarily snubbed. This said, the hotel itself is a good, clean option, with few frills. The best part of Hotel Royal is the spacious open lobby/dining room, which overlooks Schillerstrasse.
