The Meininger, just a ten-minute walk from Central Station and the Oktoberfest fairgrounds, offers fresh and simple dorms and private rooms at decent rates.
Private rooms are well-equipped with mini flat-screen TVs, wooden floors, and minimalist-style furniture. The occasional touch of funky color breathes some life into the slightly bland décor. Dorm-style rooms have six to 14 beds, and one all-female dorm has six beds. Private rooms on the top floor have excellent views (ask ahead). Bathrooms are a bit tight, but they are functional and clean.
The Meininger earns bonus points for fun extras, including an outdoor beer garden, pool table, bar, and basement game room. The spacious lobby is outfitted with cozy leather sofas. The downstairs communal kitchen has a washer and dryer for guest use.
The Meininger, part of an international chain of hostels, has a helpful, English-speaking staff and a party vibe, but a 10 PM "quiet down rule" hushes things up so you can get some sleep.

About the Meininger City Hostel & Hotel Munchen neighborhood
The blocks south of the Hauptbahnhof, or main train station, feature a staggering number of hotels. Many of Munich's sex shops can also be found here, as well as shopping, restaurants, bars and cafés. Stadtmitte is also nearby and very well served by public transportation.
