Cheap Hotels in Garment District
EuroCheapo's Guide to Cheap Hotels in New York
Neighborhood Description
As its name implies, the Garment District was once the center of the American clothing manufacturing industry. Though the factories are long gone, it's still a hotspot for fashion design companies and wholesale fabric businesses. The bulls-eye of the Garment District is bustling Herald Square, where you'll find the Macy's flagship store, and nearby, the Fashion Institute of Technology attracts design students from around the world.
Beyond fashion, this neighborhood—bustling by day and practically barren by night—has a lot to offer. For starters, it's convenient: the subway lines here lead to all parts of the city (uptown, downtown, and the boroughs) and Pennsylvania Station offers access to the world beyond the five boroughs. Then there are the sights, which include the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, and the massive, 17-acre Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. But make no mistake: you will have to look elsewhere for New York nightlife.
