Housed within a stoic brick building faced with fire escapes, the Americana Inn offers a central location on Sixth Avenue near all the sights that tourists identify as essentially Manhattan.
The Americana truly understands the Cheapo lifestyle. They've invested in all the accoutrements that the thrifty traveler cherishes. The bathrooms are shared, but they've been recently renovated, and rooms are available with an interior sink. Each floor features a brand new kitchen, especially handy for longer stays. Cable isn't common in budget hotels, but its hotel-wide here.
The stark white rooms are simple, spotless, and spacious and feature fluffy linens. We were surprised at how quiet the property is—you can literally hear a pin drop.
A bit of advice to maximize your budget: Bryant Park, just two blocks north, is not only a beautiful public space, but the pilot park for Mayor Bloomberg's plan to equip all NYC parks with free Wi-Fi. So head there to e-mail your friends back home about your fabulous trip and Cheapo lodgings.
