Located in Times Square and just around the corner from the Broadway theaters, the four-star Best Western Plus President Hotel has a fun modern feel.
Traditionally a pretty basic, budget hotel chain, Best Western has expanded in recent years to include “Best Western Plus” hotels, which tend to be more stylish (and more expensive). While not the cheapest on the block, the President’s rates are competitive with other, often less luxurious, hotels in the area—and if you time it right, they can be downright Cheapo (we saw rates around $115 in January).
Pros: Convenient to midtown attractions and Broadway theaters. Can be a good value. Cool style.
Cons: Inconsistent service. Small beds.
The Best Western Plus President’s 334 renovated rooms manage an artful mix of funky and classic. They are elegantly colorful, decked out in browns, golds and purples. Lines are clean, furnishings are dark wood, and presidential punims grace the space—from throw pillows embroidered with silhouettes of Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln to pop-art images of presidents and first ladies.
The hotel also gives a whole new meaning to the term “Presidential Suite,” with 44 Presidential Personality Suites, each custom-designed to pay playful tribute to its respective commander-in-chief. Most offer oversized bathrooms and sleeper sofas, which make them a good value for groups and families.
All guest rooms are outfitted with modern amenities, including air conditioning, a flat-panel TV, iHome docking station, telephone (with free local calls), laptop safe and coffee maker.
The private bathrooms are not luxurious, but they do the trick and are outfitted with toiletries and a hair dryer. Bathtubs are available (ask ahead).
Downstairs, the Primary Lounge is a swanky spot awash in purple and white, with funky modern furnishings and boxy chairs featuring the Republican elephant and Democratic donkey (perfect for staging a friendly political debate over signature cocktails).
The Best Western Plus President serves up Aisan eats at its two restaurants, Saigon 48 (Vietnamese) and Aoki (sushi). Additional perks include a travel desk to assist you with all your New York needs, as well as a fitness center.
Wi-Fi is free throughout (but can be spotty on the higher floors).
The President Hotel shares a block with two Broadway theaters and provides easy access to all the others. It sits between perpetual madness (Times Square, just to the south) and tranquil escape (Central Park, just 10 blocks north).
From this central perch, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall and the Museum of Modern Art are within easy walking distance, as are the shops of Fifth Avenue stores and the ethnic restaurants in Hell’s Kitchen. And plenty of nearby subway lines can transport you farther afield.
Subways: Three subway stations are within a close radius of the hotel. The C/E trains pick up at 8th Avenue at 50th Street, while the 1 train stops at Broadway and 50th Street. It’s also a short walk across 48th Street to the N/Q/R trains at 49th Street and 7th Avenue.
JFK: To reach the Best Wester Plus President from JFK, take the Air Train to Howard Beach Station, then the A express train to 42nd Street-Port Authority. Transfer to the local C or E train (across the platform) and take this one stop to 50th Street, just two blocks north of the hotel.
LaGuardia: We recommend taking an airport bus service to Penn Station, where you can catch an uptown C or E train to 50th Street.
Newark: Take the Air Train to the NJ Transit station, and then any NJ Transit train into New York Penn Station. Transfer to an uptown C or E subway train to 50th Street.

About the Best Western Plus President Hotel at Times Square neighborhood
Midtown West is packed with tourists sights... and tourist-class hotels. Working west from Fifth Avenue to Eighth Avenue, the Theater District is home not only to all the Broadway babies, but to Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, and the Museum of Modern Art. Not to mention Times Square—an entity within itself. Although most New Yorkers steer clear of this congested (and now pedestrianized) area, the neon lights, larger-than-life billboards, and wise-talking street vendors keep the visitors coming. And coming. And coming.
