A straight-forward, relatively unadorned hostel within spitting distance of Times Square, the Big Apple Hostel won't be winning any boutique hotel awards anytime soon. Still, we admire Big Apple, with its constant ongoing soft renovations and its faint whiff of bleach in the hallways (the latter a welcome olfactory element at any hostel, as far as we're concerned).
The hostel’s 100 dormitory beds and 11 private rooms are very basic. Dorm rooms don't provide much to discuss, though group bathrooms are quite well maintained and very clean. Private rooms are small, with 1980s-style patterned duvets, dark wood bed frames, framed prints above beds and handy bedside reading lamps. Little tables and safes fill the selection out, and in addition to the air conditioning in all rooms, private rooms also offer telephones and cable television.
Management and guests alike struck us as friendly. This is the sort of hostel that sees families as well as student groups and backpackers. Europeans, Australians and New Zealanders are the primary guests here. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hostel, and guests have access to a communal kitchen, as well as a courtyard complete with barbecue facilities.

About the Big Apple Hostel neighborhood
Midtown West is packed with tourists sights... and tourist-class hotels. Working west from Fifth Avenue to Hell's Kitchen and up to Central Park, the neighborhood is home to the Theater District, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Museum of Modern Art. Not to mention Times Square—an entity within itself. Though most New Yorkers steer clear of this congested (and now pedestrianized) area, the neon lights, larger-than-life billboards, and wise-talking street vendors keep the visitors coming. And coming. And coming.
