Ever wonder what happened to all the old-fashioned New York hotels? Happily, a few of them have survived, including Hotel 31. Conveniently located on 31st Street between Park and Lexington, the Hotel 31 boasts a convenient location and an old-fashioned charm. Factor in the low rates and the hotel becomes a great value.
Though rooms sport only the basics (a/c, telephone, cable TV), the 31 has a friendly staff and character to spare. It's been around since 1940, right around the time Ziggy, the semi-retired innkeeper and resident comedian, was a young man. Rooms are offered with or without private baths, and the shared bathrooms in the hallways are clean.
Wallpaper in the classic rooms varies from light blue stripes to a burgundy floral pattern. Mahogany wainscoting on the walls matches the thick, wooden doors. Even the locks on the hall bathrooms are antique brass. The wood-framed windows allow guests to get a glimpse of the Murray Hill streets below.
The Chrysler and Empire State buildings are less than a 10-minute walk away. A few rooms have views of the Empire State (ask ahead).
