Located on a quiet Harlem side-street in a gorgeous brownstone, the 102 Brownstone boutique hotel is a homey Uptown nest for those travelers looking to feel a little like locals.
Furnishings in each of the six rooms are antiquey, plush and overwrought in places. Think overstuffed lounge chairs, big antique reproduction clocks on bedside tables and dark wood. Throughout, a few style imprints do battle. There's a hint of stuffy New Orleans drawing room here and a vigorous nod to Asian style (red carpets, silk pillows, fans affixed to bathroom walls) there. Modernist style fans, take note. All rooms have cable television with DVD players, air conditioning and microwaves.
The guest house used to be an apartment building, and some of the units still feel like little apartment studios. Some bathrooms are consequently a bit tight. Other bathrooms—in the studio apartments—have jacuzzi tubs.
102 Brownstone might just be perfect for your fussy aunt, especially if she spends a lot of her spare time online. Wi-Fi access is free.

About the 102 Brownstone neighborhood
Located west of Central Park, the Upper West Side is a largely residential area, filled with tall apartment buildings, stately brownstones, and families. The area is home to Lincoln Center, the American Museum of Natural History, and Columbia University. One of its greatest attributes may be its borders: you're never more than a few blocks away from either Central Park or leisurely Riverside Park. Famous Harlem, whose importance as a historically African-American neighborhood cannot be matched, begins north of Morningside Heights. Despite its dangerous reputation, Harlem has become much safer... and much more popular with tourists.
