We’re pretty enamored with the Larchmont, a two-star hotel with a charming Greenwich Village location, which feels much more like a budget bed & breakfast in London than a Manhattan inn.
Few hotels in New York achieve the cheap-and-cheerful imperative more effectively than the Larchmont.
Pros: Leafy, residential location in Greenwich Village. Great value. Free kitchen use. Included breakfast.
Cons: Small rooms, almost all with shared bath.
The Larchmont’s 66 rooms are for the most part compact, painted in peaches and oranges and outfitted with basic furniture. We liked the small desks and in-room sinks. Though décor is not really the point of the Larchmont, there are a few interesting items. We loved, for example, the circle-framed mirrors.
Single rooms (all with shared bath) are small—those seeking a bit more space around the bed may wish to upgrade to a double. Two guests may reserve a double room or step up to a roomier queen. All of these rooms share bathrooms, and toiletries are included, as are bathrobes and slippers for those late-night dashes to the bathroom.
There are, however, a few larger family rooms with private bathroom. Regardless of configuration, all rooms are equipped with a phone, television, ceiling fan and air conditioning.
Note that room rates go up about $10-20 on Friday and Saturday nights.
Wireless Internet access is free throughout the six-floor hotel (with elevator), and there's also an Internet terminal in the small reception area. The Larchmont gets extra points for the kitchenettes found on most floors, open to all guests.
A continental breakfast is included in the nightly rate. The entire hotel is non-smoking.
The Larchmont Hotel is located on leafy, residential West 11th Street in the Village, between swanky 5th Avenue and restaurant-lined 6th Avenue. This is not your typical hotel neighborhood, as the hotel is surrounded by upscale residences and apartment buildings.
From the Larchmont, Washington Square Park and New York University are a 5-10 minute walk south, and the rest of Greenwich Village (bars, restaurants, jazz clubs, cafes) are just a few minutes beyond. The even more precious West Village is a quick five-minute walk west.
Guest reviews in brief
Almost all reviewers rave about the Larchmont’s value—where else in downtown Manhattan can you score a clean double room for $119? The neighborhood is a big plus, and many guests enjoyed eating nearby on 6th Avenue. Most found the rooms and shared baths very clean, and the kitchens (on several floors) quite convenient.
As is often the case with budget hotels in New York, rooms are small at the Larchmont, and many guests were quick to point this out. Otherwise, the only major complaint was that the included breakfast was too small. (We should point out, however, that most hotels in New York City don’t even offer breakfast!)
Subways: The hotel is located about 5-7 minutes from two different subway hubs, Union Square (serving the 4/5/6, L, N/R/Q lines) and West 4th Street (serving A/C/E, F/M, B/D). Furthermore, a Path Train stop with service to New Jersey is located two blocks away on 9th Street.
JFK: To reach the hotel from JFK, take the Air Train to the Howard Beach Station, then take the A train toward Manhattan to West 4th Street. Walk to the hotel (about 5 minutes).
LaGuardia: From LaGuardia, we’d recommend taking the New York Airport Service bus to Penn Station, then taking the C or E train Downtown to 14th Street, then walking to the hotel. Or you could simply take a taxi from the airport.
Newark: From Newark Airport, take the Air Train to the NJ Transit station, and then any NJ Transit train into Penn Station. From there, take the C or E train Downtown to 14th Street and walk to the hotel.

About the Larchmont Hotel neighborhood
Running west from Lafayette Street and north to 14th Street, Greenwich Village is, in many ways, classic New York—brimming with history, culture, and lively characters. It's home to New York University, Washington Square Park, sidewalk cafes, used book shops, and cheap restaurants. On weekend nights, the neighborhood's comedy, jazz, and live music bars spill into the streets. The West Village, which begins after Seventh Avenue, is one of the most charming places in Manhattan, with smaller apartment buildings and brownstones along leafy streets. It's also (no surprise), quite expensive.
