We’re pretty enamored of the Larchmont, a three-star hotel in the charming West Village, which feels much more like a budget bed & breakfast in London than a Manhattan inn. Few hotels in New York express the cheap-and-cheerful imperative more directly than the Larchmont.
The Larchmont’s 66 rooms are for the most part compact, painted in peaches and oranges, with basic furniture. We liked the small desks and in-room sinks. Though décor is not really the point of the Larchmont, there are a few interesting items. We loved, for example, the circle-framed mirrors. All rooms are equipped with phones, television and air conditioning.
There are a few en suite family rooms, though most rooms feature shared facilities. Toiletries are included, as are bathrobes and slippers for those late-night dashes to the bathroom.
A continental breakfast is included in the nightly rate. Wireless Internet access is free, and there's also an Internet terminal in the small reception area. The Larchmont gets extra bonus points for the kitchenettes found on most floors, open to all guests.

About the Larchmont Hotel neighborhood
Running west from Lafayette Street and north to 14th Street, Greenwich Village is, in many ways, classic New York—brimming with history, culture, and lively characters. It's home to New York University, Washington Square Park, sidewalk cafes, used book shops, and cheap restaurants. On weekend nights, the neighborhood's comedy, jazz, and live music bars spill into the streets. The West Village, which begins after Seventh Avenue, is one of the most charming places in Manhattan, with smaller apartment buildings and brownstones along leafy streets. It's also (no surprise), quite expensive.
