Situated in the shadow of the Flatiron Building, this basic budget hotel is nestled amongst historical stone buildings just around the corner from Madison Square Park. The neighborhood is one of Manhattanés most magnificent, and with Fifth Avenue so close, Cheapos will appreciate every penny they've saved on room rates.
That said, don't be too disappointed when you walk into the lobby. Despite its vintage Broadway posters, it has all the charm of a Monday morning commute during rush hour. The glass partition office and pint-size convenience store are apropos of a bus station.
But if the lobby is overwhelmingly business-like, it's reflective of the staff's industrious character. The rooms are clean, and while the décor remains unremarkable, the amenities compensate. Not many budget hotels with this price tag also offer complimentary breakfast and feature private bathrooms, cable TV, and mini-fridges in every room.
If you value function over fashion, Madison Hotel is a great choice. And if you still find yourself yearning for the latter, just step outside to appreciate all this neighborhood has to offer.
