Looking for a hostel with low rates, a great location, and communal premises? Well, we've found one! Run for young people by young people, the Mount Royal Hostel is rough around the edges and easy on your budget.
The hostel has a patio out back that provides an oasis among the neighboring fire escapes and plenty of potential for summertime festivities. And there's also a game room, currently undergoing some work, with gaming tables and a TV lounge.
Rooms are more soberly decorated, though dorms do have a TV—a rarity in the hostel world. Private rooms are compact and clean. And while the haphazard basement lounge might remind you of high school days, the shared bathrooms, gratefully, will not take you back to your freshman year dorm.
Mount Royal is certainly a work in progress, but the staff is friendly and the hostel's proximity to Riverside Park means the chirping of birds is more audible than the honking of horns.
