Housed in a Georgian building a short walk from Times Square, the Portland Square Hotel has been a budget mainstay for years. However, the hotel is undergoing renovations, planning to emerge as a fancy four star. Thus, guests have until the first quarter of 2007 to sleep in one of the Portland's bargain beds.
The small lobby is warmly decorated with thick, dark brown leather couches and moody lighting.
Rooms are best summed up by a budget hotel standard: the lone picture on the wall that actually does more to accentuate the lack of décor than to create it. Painted in contrasting shades of beige and brown, the rooms are clean and functional. Beds are outfitted with soft mattresses, down duvets, and thick throw pillows. If the décor doesn't knock you out, these comfortable beds will certainly put you to sleep.
