If you like staying at Red Roof hotels because you know what to expect, you might be surprised when you arrive at the NYC site. But don't worry—change is a good thing in this case.
Rather than the typical roadside Red Roof, this hotel is located in the oft-overlooked, one-block neighborhood of Koreatown, providing an opportunity to sample this Asian fare that is, outside of Gotham, much less available than Chinese or Japanese food. If your palate is as tried as your taste in hotels, don't worry. Koreatown is surrounded by option—plentiful Midtown.
Inside the hotel, the décor of this Red Roof breaks with convention as well. The lobby is mostly modern with Byzantine highlights such as iconographic paintings and hanging iron lamps. The bar in the mezzanine has a lounge atmosphere accentuated by dimmed lighting and small, candlelit tables ringed with armchairs.
Upstairs you're more likely to feel at home. Rooms are standard and clean, but some haven't finished airing out years of cigarette smoke. The furnishings are crisp and uniform: the desk, nightstand, dresser, and headboard all look cut from the same plank. And of course, the bathrooms benefit from chain-hotel efficiency.
