The best thing about the simple, one-star St. Marks Hotel is likely the location, next to countless gritty downtown Manhattan attractions. Here unfussy travelers will find clean, if basic, accommodations in a historic setting and at reasonable rates.

Quick read

Pros: Excellent value for rooms with private bathrooms. Lively neighborhood.

Cons: Street noise. No elevator and steep stairs. No credit cards accepted.

Many of St. Marks Hotel’s 70 rooms are quite small, although they are by no means tiny for Manhattan. We liked their simplicity. Wooden bed frames and wardrobes are done in dark chocolate, walls are muted beige and flat-panel televisions are wall-mounted.

These rooms have an almost monastery-like simplicity to them. While they may not have an enormous amount of character, there’s none of the overwhelming drudgery of typical US hotel décor here. In fact, there are actually some cute details in the mix.

All rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with telephones and flat-paneled TVs with DVD players. Bathrooms are private and feature smart checkered tiles. (Hair dryers are available upon request.)

Hotel Facilities

Wi-Fi is available for a fee. Note that the hotel does not have an elevator and that the St. Marks Hotel accepts cash and travelers checks only. Discounts are available for longer stays.

Outside the doors of the St. Marks Hotel lies the pandemonium of St. Mark’s Place, the epicenter of New York’s alternakid scene in all of its pierced, tattooed and grungy glory. Yet inside the hotel, an almost sedate atmosphere predominates.

The East Village is home to a plethora of delicious food joints, including one of our favorite little Japanese holes-in-the-wall, tiny Otafuku that serves up delicious okonomiyaki (savory pancakes).

Among the many nearby drinking establishments, none has a hoppier history than McSorley’s Old Ale House around the corner on East 7th Street. Affordable ethnic restaurants attract early 20-somethings, especially students at NYU.

The hotel is also a short walk to Greenwich Village and SoHo to the west or Union Square to the north.

Guest reviews in brief

Basic yet clean rooms equipped with private bathrooms are unbeatable in value – so much so that one guest calls it “the best deal in town.” To capitalize on a deal this good expect to pay in cash or with travelers checks.

Situated at the gateway to the East Village, the St. Marks Hotel’s lively location cuts two ways. Guests love being surrounded by the energetic scene, but street noise at night is the most prevalent problem. Earplugs are recommended, and turning on the air conditioning or fan can help, too.

Subways: Catch the 6 train at Astor Place just one block west of the hotel. The N/R trains stop at 8th Street-NYU two blocks west of the hotel.

JFK: Take the Air Train to Sutphin Boulevard-Archer Avenue Station and transfer to a Manhattan-bound E subway train to Lexington Avenue-53rd Street Station. Transfer to a downtown 6 train to Astor Place. The hotel is one block east.

LaGuardia: We recommend an airport bus service to Grand Central and then taking a downtown 6 train from Grand Central to Astor Place. Or simply take a taxi to the hotel.

Newark: Take the Air Train to the NJ Transit station, and then any NJ Transit train into New York Penn Station. From here a cab directly to the hotel is most convenient because the subway requires two transfers. By subway from 34th Street-Penn Station take a downtown A/C/E train to 14th Street. Transfer to a Brooklyn-bound L train and get off at 14th Street to finally transfer to a downtown 6 train one stop to Astor Place.

About the St. Marks Hotel neighborhood

The "down and dirty" East Village really isn't so down and dirty anymore. Things took a turn in the late '80s and '90s, and now it's all about NYU students, quirky shops, cheap food, raucous pubs, and sleek little bars.
