Located in the Upper West Side's attractive landmark district, this massive YMCA offers bare-bones guestrooms with shared and semi-private bathrooms at very reasonable rates.
The building exterior resembles the neighborhood's many austere churches, but the multi-colored pillars in the ornate entranceway labeled YMCA set it apart. The dark wood benches and barrel-vaulted ceiling in the lobby are similarly cathedral-esque.
Guest rooms are more somber. The collegiate hallways, lined with fluorescent lights and payphones, are a good indication of what's to come. Rooms are akin to dormitories with white walls and exposed pipes. Many are outfitted with bunk beds. Renovated rooms on the 12th and 13th floors have newer linens, but otherwise, there's little difference.
Private and semi-private bathrooms are cleaned frequently, but the YMCA is massive. Best to pack those old college flip-flops.
The first-floor cafeteria serves sandwiches, burgers, and "daily special" entrees. There's also a modest salad bar.
