Through North America—nay, the world—YMCAs double as inexpensive guesthouses and hostels, places where the budget-strapped can find relatively cheap nightly accommodation. The West Side YMCA, located on West 63rd Street near Lincoln Center, is no exception to this rule. It is a high-volume dormitory. Tons of students and groups stay here, and the lobby is often chaotic. In addition to guests, there are tons of gym goers and others taking advantage of YMCA services passing through.
The West Side Y's 360 rooms come in a categories, from bare-bones to lower-midrange. None are luxurious; some, in fact, are frankly a bit ratty at the edges. Many rooms have cold looking linoleum floors and bare bones hostel-style bunk bed accommodations. Televisions are, somewhat surprisingly, omnipresent. There are rooms with both private and shared facilities.
For those who like privacy, we recommend the "premium" double rooms with semi-private bathrooms, which are about $15 more expensive than standard double rooms. This might be one of the better places to opt for a higher category of room, as the "premium" rooms are in far better shape than those of the standard variety.
Wi-Fi is free, though it can only be reliably accessed from the lobby. The final and completely undeniable perk is access to the YMCA's spacious gym and pool facilities.

About the West Side YMCA neighborhood
More laid-back, and allegedly more intellectual, than its East-Side cousin, the Upper West Side is a largely residential area, filled with tall apartment buildings and stately brownstones. This area, which begins at Columbus Circle and ends at Morningside Heights, is home to the Lincoln Center, the American Museum of Natural History, and Columbia University. However, one of its greatest attributes may be its borders: sandwiched between the iconic Central Park and leisurely Riverside Park, greenery is never more than a few blocks away. Though a hip place during the '70s and '80s, when rents were actually affordable, the Upper West Side is much more moneyed now, filled with affluent families and strollers. Busy Broadway forms the commercial hub, with businesses catering to New Yorker's everyday needs. This, along with Amsterdam and Columbus avenues, is good place to find tasty, affordable eats.
Famous Harlem, whose importance as a historically African-American neighborhood cannot be matched, begins north of Morningside Heights. The Apollo Theater, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and the Cloisters can all be found here. Despite its dangerous reputation, Harlem has become much safer... and much more popular with tourists. Gentrification, spurred on by a race for its beautiful brownstones, has brought change, for better or for worse.
